I realized just now that in December of 2009, I'll have known the core of my current group of friends for 10 years.

Over the course of my life, I average just over two years living in any particular location. The pattern hasn't exactly been broken in recent years - one year in Ohio, one in my grandmother's house, one in my own apartment, and now one + epsilon in campus housing. In the midst of all that, internet access has meant that I'm able to have friends for more than a year or two at a time (in the dark days of high school, it meant that I had friends, period), and am never rebuilding my social networks from scratch. Since I don't get close to people quickly, that kind of continuity makes all the difference.

And those of you I haven't known for so long? I hope to be able to make the same realization about in however-many years.

Just wanted to let you guys know that you're appreciated. :)

Thank you. I believe our system has known you for...about four years, actually. (I haven't known anyone here that long, personally, though.)

How long have you known me? Nine years? Ten?

Yet, in all that time we were never friends. I applaud you, however, for your achievement. Maybe you should thank the internet makers for allowing you the chance to maintain contact for so long.

Thank you.

And I can dig up names and addresses for you, but they might be very old, weird geeky men with little grasp of reality, like most internet geeks. Just really old and wrinkly.

That was a joke.
