Recovery day at a relative's house in the greater Seattle area (approx. Bellevue). We'll be spending Shabbat here, then heading out to the boonies Ski-landia on Sunday. Likely to be scarce online until arrival, because local wifi is recalcitrant.

Spent much of the afternoon with the Sibley Guide to Birds, trying to ID little brown fluttery critters. (Of note: the local "Oregon chickadee" is a variety of dark-eyed junco. For some reason, the local nuthatches tend to have one or more white seams between regions of color.)

This move has been a right clusterfuck, and not in the fun way. But we're out as of 2/14 (during which, it was so cold that Boston harbor was steaming), and had all the resulting boxes & furniture shoved into Tetrisland (AKA storage unit) early the next morning. I administrated my ass off, in exchange for Z taking on the vast majority of lugging boxes downstairs. [personal profile] plures' help has been invaluable throughout.

Then we fell over and slept for 16-20h, each. Badly needed.

Presently T-40h to departure for Seattle. Still need to refactor luggage, sort a last handful of items into 'important enough to ship or drag with us' vs. 'drop off at storage unit', and usefully dispose of the last contents of the chest freezer (which are currently sitting outside in a cooler, to take advantage of this past weeks' deep-freeze conditions).

Plan A was to ask around among friends - nobody's looking for a cat just now. Plan B was to put the word out around our synagogue - resident cat-fancier hasn't been seen lately, and nobody else has shown interest. Plan C was a long-shot with one of my SIL's friends who'd recently had to put down her cat of many years - no-go, because she has too much chaos in her life to add more responsibilities.

Plan of last resort? Solicit help from the Internets at large. Signal boosting to any Bostonians you readers might know is definitely appreciated.

New lease acquired. We'll be moving after finals.
Just got back from a showing, not too far from Magoun Square. Looks promising. We're going to apply.
Sunday (9/4) was RenFaire day with [livejournal.com profile] siderea and [livejournal.com profile] tn3270; I'd guess that King Richard's Faire is about half the size of its Phoenix counterpart. Was fun for what it was. Most notable event was that [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv solved a puzzle ring with no assistance. Took him around 2.5h, and when he'd finished, he suggested that he should try it again to make sure he understood what he'd done, rather than just getting it by accident. All three of the staff who'd watched him puzzling over it shouted "NO!" in perfect unplanned unison. ;)

Monday (9/5), we cleared the last of our belongings out of the basement of the old apartment. There's some garden stuff left outside, but I'm allowed to continue gardening until the season thoroughly finishes around (IIRC) November for the cold-hardy plants. Due to moving and setup for classes, I didn't get to bed until 02:00 or so Tuesday morning.

Tuesday (9/6) was my first day of class. I got up absurdly early for a doctor's appointment that turned out to be nearly useless. Once in class, I learned that I'm now in waitlist position 3/12 for Population Biology, but nothing of significance actually happened. After class, puzzled over administrativa for two hours or so, then met [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv at his office and fell asleep on a couch for another three. We went out for dinner, had delicious fried vegetables, and didn't get home until about 22:00. I did some more damn paperwork, and all of a sudden it was 02:00 Wednesday... but I needed to pour some recent events out of my head before I could sleep. And here I am.

Wednesday (9/7) is my first violin class. Its location is still listed as "to be determined". I can tell it's going to be a fun day already.

Monday, 8/29 - Messed up my back while bicycling, spent most of the day trying to find some way to hurt less. Made soonest possible appointment with the chiropractor, for 9/1.

Tuesday, 8/30 - Final packing marathon for all the things that were too necessary or awkward to box up before.

Wednesday, 8/31 - U-Haul out at the end of the orange line rented us a pickup truck for 24h. (Our original reservation, made in June, was for two days, they tried to jerk us around and tell us we could only keep it for 8h back in July, and we eventually settled on that middle ground.) Final push of boxes and furniture. [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv demonstrated his awesomeness by getting the final load of stuff into the moving truck at awful o'clock in the morning, while I was curled up in a ball of pain and tiredness. Slept about 5h on my own bed, rather than the futon, for the first time in about a week.

Thursday, 9/1 - Unloaded the last batch of stuff from the moving truck. Went to the chiropractor while [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv returned the truck. Came home and fell over for a couple of hours. Woke up with barely enough time to race one of the cats to her vet appointment. (She was unhappy about being in the cat carrier. Even less so about the carrier being loaded into my backpack, but it seemed less risky than strapping the carrier to the cargo rack.) Came home with cat who no longer had an ingrown claw, or hair mats. Released cat to hide under the bed, and slept some more.

Friday, 9/2 - Started feeling awake again around midnight, and have been unboxing basic necessities like books and clothing. Should probably go to bed soon.

At least temporarily. It needs to stay clear for a couple of days so that we can maneuver the box spring in, though.

I am so glad today is over. We moved the container garden. It took four pickup-truck loads.

On the plus side, that tips the definition in my head from "moving out of the old apartment" over to "moving into the new apartment". I am at home.

Now? Shower. Sleep.

The apartment may be ready to be made livable, with about 3/4 of its final furniture and half our other belongings. Tomorrow will most likely consist of either that, or a round of epic dish-washing (batch processing items stored in the basement) followed by moving them over, depending on whether/how much it rains.

First significant batch of objects moved to the new apartment. Zipcar turns out to offer a significant discount for middle-of-the-night reservations.

I go fall over now. The contractors will presumably start doing their thing bright and early.

Today I did a round of cleaning, in order to more easily find the things that need to be packed. In light of a recent NYTimes article on decision fatigue which mentions it being offset by consuming sugar, I tried drinking gatorade throughout the day. Had much better endurance than I usually do for that sort of task. Even if it's all placebo effect, it tentatively seems to work.

Putting things in boxes seems to have unleashed some latent acquisitiveness. In the past couple of weeks, I've bought or ordered: Listful. )
The final list will probably be longer.

I'm trying to pack, but my forwards momentum is being sapped by how disgustingly humid it is today. Ugh.

( Aug. 10th, 2011 08:55 am)
This afternoon, we go and sign a lease.

It's for a 1br apartment north of Teele Square, between Tufts and Alewife Brook. The apartment is a sublet from a tenant with a long-term lease, who's going to spend a couple of years out of the country living with his Filipino wife. We'll also be taking care of two of his cats while he's away, at their owner's expense. (Yes, I'm allergic. I've missed having cats enough that I don't care.) We've checked with the property management company, and everything's aboveboard.

Our appointment to do paperwork is for 16:00 today.
Game theory suggests that I should take the next available opportunity to shaft you for having thrown [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv and myself under the bus for your own convenience, particularly at this late a time. But I'm so disgusted by your behavior that I'd just be happy to never see you again. (I realize that this may pose a problem if you see the error of your ways and respond to [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv's e-mail appropriately, but I'll deal with that if and when we come to it.)

No love,
- Me

( Jul. 28th, 2011 11:44 pm)
Today, [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv and I went to showings of four apartments in three buildings (was supposed to be more, but one landlord backed out on us). I took photos, [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv wrote the reports for our two currently-not-here future housemates. Hoping to have a response from both by noon.

Of the two most promising, one is a little bit far from the Red Line, and a little bit on the expensive side, but quite nice inside and out. The other is half a mile's walk to the Red Line (less as the crow flies), and has a large yard, but is on the small side and currently in the middle of heavy remodeling. If the group agrees to apply, I expect we'd have a pretty good chance at either.

For the moment, I've done everything I can. All that's left is waiting.
I want my life back.
