The Guardian reports that Staphylococcus aureus, already associated with and predispositive towards eczema development, makes a protein that interacts directly with the nerves that produce/transmit itching sensations.
Hm.. wonder if you could make a competitive inhibitor based on that protein that blocks the receptor sites, and stops the itch. I mean, we have some great pain relief drugs, but nothing really for itchiness.
Possibly! Though in the ideal case you'd want to inactivate the offending protein, because it seems to exist to chew up certain immune-system proteins. We became sensitive to it for a reason.
