Question for the Internet Oracle

A friend's recent (locked) post on "mental tapes" has got me wondering - is there a general term for non-volitional things that happen inside a mind? Doesn't have to be English.

not sure if this applies but i've often heard 'intrusive thoughts.'

That's a subset of what I'm going for, here. The range I'd like a word to cover runs from, at minimum, intrusive thoughts to.. call them 'utilities', like the one that translates thought into language.
