Scheduling vs. Capability

Today I...

* Blew off my DiffEQ class in order to solve some differential equations (in the homework for my next class).
* Gave a mini-lecture introducing class #2 to Matt Kawski's vector field analysis program (requires Java), on less than 24h notice.
* Spent my lunch hour talking with one of the campus-organization-affiliated rabbis, who explained a little about how citations can get lost when a work is translated and republished. (This problem seems to affect more than one English version of the Shulchan Aruch, which is what prompted the question.)
* Played with liquid nitrogen, and got paid for it. (Okay, I was technically too busy cyrogenically dehydrating a sample to play with the coolant.. And after the sample unexpectedly crystallized, then went *poof* when air was reintroduced to the vacuum system, I shortly became busy cleaning out the inside of the vac equipment. But still, liquid nitrogen.)
* Made a quick "run" (3mi bicycle round trip) to Target for cheap non-leather shoes, due to impending prohibition on Yom Kippur.
* Got home, elevated my feet, and iced them up.

I've had my feet elevated and on ice for more than 2h now. They still hurt - not just while walking around, but lying here in bed. That's not at all typical behavior for my body, so I can probably conclude that I pushed it too far today.

This is also not an isolated incident in the semester. I've long known that I can walk for extended periods without pain, but not stand still for them. The increased frequency of standing-only lab time this semester could easily be making things worse. My shoes seem unlikely to be a factor; they'd have to have deteriorated suddenly between the summer and fall semesters.

Which leaves the question of what to do about it. Aside from trying to take more breaks or to sit during certain labwork, no answer immediately presents itself.

Dear internets, do you have any suggestions?

Ask the school to provide those ergonomic soft floor pads around the stand areas? They were mandatory OSHA things where I worked. Also, some expensive shoes, usually available through sports medicine places, are designed to help with that sort of thing. Expensive, though.
