Airport layover in Philidelphia

Why did I decide to travel, again?

22:37: ETA: I'm not sure whether (promotional) free in-flight wifi is adequate compensation for being in the front-most row of coach seating, on both flights. But it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

We were supposed to fly to Phoenix tomorrow. However, the airline canceled all flights out of Boston tomorrow due to the impending blizzard.

I spoke with an efficient customer service person who has us scheduled for a flight leaving almost exactly 24h later. Kind've needed that day, though.

Whoa.

I keep realizing that in less than a week, I'm going to be married. It feels.. continually mildly surprising.

Weddings have a lot of moving parts.

I think the gears all mesh correctly, now. Let's hope they stay that way.

Done.

I ordered a dress this afternoon. (Technically, a three-piece skirt/shirt/jacket arrangement.) The competing bids were very close together, so I went with the one that I thought I'd be able to get more use out of, re-dyed to become general formalwear.

God, I'm glad that's over.

Brain dump

Today (Wednesday, 12/29) was rather productive. I dealt with the furnace repairman (missing an appointment for it, but heat is important), stopped in at the grocery co-op, went and got a quote from a dressmaker*, cooked dinner (boil parsnips, mash with chopped parsley, drizzle with a nice olive oil; serve with hard-boiled eggs on the side), and looked up dressmakers to get competing quotes from tomorrow (Thursday, 12/30).

And then I talked on the phone with my mom, and she insisted that I check the websites of regular stores for nice non-wedding dresses, because the first price quoted to me was too high. (It's not cheap, but is well within the "reasonable for custom clothing" zone.) I did so, because due diligence with null result generally is enough to make her stop pushing a bad idea. After 30min or so of subjecting myself to the usual "people who wear your size aren't allowed to look nice; here's our selection of ugly" that clothing stores seem to specialize in, I called back and was (perhaps unnecessarily) nasty about it. I do think that I've nipped that idea in the bud. But now I need to put it away enough to fall asleep, because I'm supposed to get up in 7h.

* Standard off-the-rack wedding dresses have so far proven unusable - not due to size issues, but due to their inability to cover the long underwear necessary for an outdoor wedding. The designers don't even seem to think that people walk between their car in the parking lot and the warm indoors.

Prevention

Downstairs heater is still out (left messages for the repair service twice, no callback) and the temperature keeps dropping. Unsurprising, since the temperature outside right now is 11F. We've turned faucets to a trickle downstairs and in the second-floor bathroom, in order to remove the possibility of either pipe column freezing.

Tomorrow.. Shopping for a wedding dress. Digging out the driveway so that the furnace repairman has somewhere to park.

Observation

Normally, I use projects and experiments as a pressure valve. You'll quite often see me start a new project or revive an old one at the height of stress, because I find that I need to do something unrelated to whatever is causing the stress, right now. (Speaking of which, there are a few follow-up posts about prior projects that I've been meaning to write..) But with class, wedding arrangements*, and playing catch up from being sick/recovery, my available time to de-stress is being squeezed from all directions. Usually, this kind of situation does not end well.

* For anyone I haven't yet mentioned it to, the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv and I will be getting married in early to mid-January. Preparing for this gives me great understanding of why people might decide to elope.
