Something that fell out of my reading, today...

My current book is Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. I'm less than halfway through, but so far it's fantastic.

I want to talk about one of the exercises, which aims to shake out key bits of "how other people should change to make you feel valued". To do this, one is to quickly and without thinking much, complete the sentences:

* I wish other people were more ______.
* Why is it so hard for people to ______?
* For a change, I would love someone to treat me like ______.
* Maybe one of these days I'll find someone who will ______.
* In an ideal world with good people, other people would ______.

Where I've been all this time...

Between roughly March and mid-October, I was shuffling from the homes of friends* to relatives' and back again, spending half a week in either so as not to wear out my welcome, and heading out to Leavenworth (location of free housing, far from doctors & therapists) when I couldn't manage one of the transitions. It was exhausting and left me in a constant state of social overextension.

I am presently approaching the end of week 4 of 5 on a sublease and am finally, every so often, starting to have a spoon to spare. Of course, after this, I'll be right back to what's become the ordinary grind. That will last for a week and a half, then at the end of the month I'm off to visit [personal profile] premchaia_pre4 for a couple of weeks. That will be nice.

Houseguest

A friend of mine will be staying a week and a half or so, until his lease for accommodations near his university begins. This has prompted [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv and I to deal with a number of tasks that had gone on the 'yeah, we'll deal with it later' list. Maybe we should have visitors every 6mo or so, just to make sure that stuff gets done.

This afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv and I had lunch with [personal profile] goldkin and [personal profile] blackvoiddragon at Solsticio, which was fun. The restaurant is worth going back to, as well.

I developed a migraine on the way home and have spent pretty much all of the evening trying to wait it out. (I suspect that traffic blinkenlights were the trigger, but can't be certain.) The discovery of the day has been that, at least in the later stages, I can drown out the skull-splitting headache with a sufficiently warm hot pack. It's still uncomfortable, but a qualitatively more tolerable kind of discomfort.

Visits

[livejournal.com profile] takhleet was here this weekend, passing through on the route from Washington, D.C. to Victoria, BC. She's good company, and it was great to see her.

Now that the semester is done with, I find myself in a recovery state. Spent at least half of yesterday asleep - quite possibly more. If nothing else, it's a nice change from this semester's insomnia.

Expect me to be scarce here and in real-time communication media until earlyish January. I'll most likely be spending all of my social energy with [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv.

Also. In a previous entry, I mentioned having an abnormal EKG. It's been deemed not medically relevant, and explained to me that "abnormal" but harmless results are actually pretty common for women. (To the extent that some people want distinct male and female norming groups for EKG results. We'll see if that ever happens.)

I should've started winter break by now...

...but I'm stuck dealing with the lab that will not die. All lab reports due at the very end of the semester.

In some ways, though, winter break begins whether I'm finished or not. [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv arrives a little after 23:00 today. I can hardly wait.

Time and friendships

I realized just now that in December of 2009, I'll have known the core of my current group of friends for 10 years.

Over the course of my life, I average just over two years living in any particular location. The pattern hasn't exactly been broken in recent years - one year in Ohio, one in my grandmother's house, one in my own apartment, and now one + epsilon in campus housing. In the midst of all that, internet access has meant that I'm able to have friends for more than a year or two at a time (in the dark days of high school, it meant that I had friends, period), and am never rebuilding my social networks from scratch. Since I don't get close to people quickly, that kind of continuity makes all the difference.

And those of you I haven't known for so long? I hope to be able to make the same realization about in however-many years.

Just wanted to let you guys know that you're appreciated. :)

Busy day.

Toured Brandeis today. Nice place, with a nice chem department. Graduate class size is throttled by financial constraints, since they were among Maddoff's Ponzi-scheme victims. Might apply anyway - being in the top five of 150 is typically easier than being in the top 50 of 500.

By the time I'd boarded the train home, [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv was on his way to Barcelona to give his first-ever conference presentation. I miss him already.

Got ambushed by a bookstore and now own a copy of Flatland. Disentangled myself in time to have sushi with [personal profile] siderea, which was delightful.

Arrived home and thought about grad school some more. Looked up the required documentation for testing accommodations during the GRE. Considered writing a rant about the requirements, but don't have the emotional energy to maintain outrage while I write.

Should really go to bed now. Might even do it.

[livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv's housemates are a bunch of foodies. Somehow he didn't see fit to mention this before I arrived, but it's been a lovely surprise.
