It's so humid today...

..that we've moved the salt into the bedroom, where the A/C unit is. Because [livejournal.com profile] zeightyfiv noticed that it was deliquescing.

Close encounters of the WTF kind

On my way home from the Davis farmer's market today, I had the weirdest interaction.

When I arrived at the bus stop, laden with book and drink and bag of veggies, there were two people already there. One black woman (who I later learned was a Hatian immigrant) and one local-looking white guy who was ranting to her through a significant speech impediment while she did that lean-back-nod-and-make-noncommittal-sounds routine of someone who's too polite to tell a speaker to go away.

I sat down on the far side of the bench, and Mr. Shouty took a sudden dislike to me. I couldn't understand a word of what he was saying, but he stood up and instead of getting in my face as I'd expected, struck a textbook boxing pose.

I had automatically half-raised my right arm (complete with milkshake) to be ready to block, expecting him to come at me if I let my attention wander in the slightest. Then the Hatian lady told him not to fight, and that got him shouting at her. Which he evidently got tired of when she didn't respond, because he left a minute or so later.

A few minutes afterwards, we were talking about the weather when we heard the same guy shouting from up the street.

So, uh, what was that? Anybody know?

Well, that was interesting.

During my commute this morning, the red line burst into flames. I'm impressed that it only made me 50min late. While waiting for the totally inadequate shuttle buses in Harvard Sq., I got to watch a peregrine falcon hanging out on the building across the street, so it wasn't all bad.

Other than that, have been insanely busy. Class + Pesach setup = Argh. So many things to do, and yet I'm stuck on campus.

Signs

Thursday, 2/16 - First bluejays sighted.

Tuesday, 2/21 - Daffodil leaves, new since Friday morning. First exam in Plant Physiology; was heavy but not quite as bad as I'd been expecting.

Spring? Kinda? Almost?

Yesterday, I saw the first confused bud-break on a large bush. Today, migrating Canada geese passed through campus.

Did we actually get winter this year?

Most entertaining sushi yet

"On Fire" maki, Taipei Tokyo, Davis Square.

Really is on fire when they serve it.

(On the whole, the restaurant is nice but overpriced. Hana Sushi is still better, but closes earlier on Sundays.)

Concert

Saw the Boston Baroque perform at the New England Conservatory, this evening. Much shiny.

Now, I go fall over.

Rain in February

First it snowed tapioca. Then it rained for a while. Tonight it's supposed to freeze hard. Since the snow is blocking almost all storm drains, water has pooled in low-lying areas like shoveled sidewalks and crosswalks.

Tomorrow is going to be so much Fun.

We were supposed to fly to Phoenix tomorrow. However, the airline canceled all flights out of Boston tomorrow due to the impending blizzard.

I spoke with an efficient customer service person who has us scheduled for a flight leaving almost exactly 24h later. Kind've needed that day, though.

Note to NSTAR

Dear NSTAR Gas,

I'd like to give you money. Really, I would. But before I can do that, you need to get a bill from your printer to my mailbox. If you have to try a fourth time, I'm going to ask for it to be sent certified mail.

Or, you know, I could just conclude that you don't want my money.

Frustratedly,
- Me

Bug-bitten tip of the day

You can chew benadryl to make it take effect faster, but the taste is truly awful.

My future landlady is really cool

I'll be doing the landscaping at the house she's buying. I asked how she felt about keeping chickens, and the response was "We should do it!". I didn't need to sell the idea at all.

Air quality? What air quality?

Due to massive forest fires in Canada, Boston is hazy with smoke right now. And I'm feeling the same kind of fatigue that's routine while I'm staying at my mom's house, which looks out onto five lanes of traffic. It's suggestive, to say the least.

And now I'm going to take a nap, and hope that it rains this evening to clear the air.
